Song: Twelve Days of Camping

Camping and campfires lead to campfire songs! I learned this song at our recent Songapalooza. It’s a great take on the Twelve Days of Christmas! I’ll bet your troop could come up with their own version!

Twelve Days of Camping

(sung to the tune of Twelve Days of Christmas)

On the 1st day of camping my troop brought to me -

A scrub brush for the latrines

2 dirty skillets and

3 logs to chop

4 cans of Off

5 stinky socks

6 leaky buckets

7 slimy snakes

8 rusty saws

9 muddy boots

10 burned fingers

11 chared S’mores

12 bees a-swarming

Here’s a video from our Songapalooza of a group singing the song (sorry about the quality!):

With warmer weather it’s time for troops to go camping. I found on GSUSA’s YouTube channel some troop camping videos from the 1950′s. I’m guessing they might have been used as training movies for troop leaders.

In this first video the girls decide they want to go camping! But the leaders are not ready and they girls don’t have the skills. So they take a couple of meetings to learn the skills needed to go on their first camping adventure. This video shows knife skills, how to start a fire and some conflict resolution techniques the girls use (useful even today!).

Next week – outdoor cooking & more!

History 101: April

“It has been an inspiring thought to me to imagine these troop meetings of yours, Girl Scouts, ready to do your share in this splendid Scouting of ours.”

Juliette Gordon Low, Founder, Girls Scouts, excerpt from “Juliette Gordon Low’s Birthday Message,” The American Girl, October, 1924.

Time to look back at Girl Scout history for the month of April and the 1940′s! (Girl Scout History information from Girl Scout website – check it out for more history!)

Girl Scout History – April:  In 1916, the Girl Scout headquarters moved to New York. In 1956 a site for the new headquarters building is acquired at 830 Third Ave. The first annual Girl Scout Leader’s Day is celebrated in 1982. In 1993, Girl Scouts encourage girls to spend the day with their Mom’s at the first Take Our Daughters to Work Day.

1940 – 1949: During WWII, Girl Scouts collected scrap metal to help with the war efforts.  They also grew Victory Gardens during the war. Girls collected 1.5 million articles of clothing that were sent overseas to children and adult victims of war. Girl Scouts learned about aviation through the Wing Scout program.

Next month – May and the 1950′s!
