Song: Johnny Appleseed (Grace)

2012
07.26

My daughters learn most of their Girl Scout songs at camp and some have stories that go along with them. This song – “Johnny Appleseed” was banned from our troop using it for a while. At camp, every time the campers sang the grace “Johnny Appleseed” it would rain, not the slow gentle rain, but big thunderstorm kind of rain! So if your area of the country needs rain and your troop is going camping, try singing “Johnny Appleseed” to see if you get some rain. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Johnny Appleseed

The Lord is good to me
And so I thank the Lord
For giving me the things I need
The sun, the rain, and the apple seed
The Lord is good to me.

And every seed I sow
Will grow into a tree
And someday soon will apples bear
For everyone in the world to share
The Lord is good to me.

Here is a video I found from Music for Girl Scouts with the music. They have the second verse which I had never learned/heard. It’s really pretty also.

What is your favorite Girl Scout grace?

Video: 25th Anniversary Encampment (Camporee)

In 1937, Girl Scouts did what we love to do today – camp. They held an encampment for the 25th Anniversary of Girl Scouts in New York. There were girls from 26 countries in attendance at the encampment (today we call them camporees!). I found a video of the “Silver Jubilee Encampment”.

The Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia council held the Centennial Camporee in June, 2012. They expected up to 1,200 participants! I was hoping to find a video that showcased some of the things they did at the Centennial Camporee but couldn’t find it. Maybe they are still working on it!

My council is hosting a 100th Anniversary Outdoor Roundup on Grandfather Mountain in September. They are estimating up to 800 participants to attend. If your troop is in the area, check out the website for more details: GS, Carolina’s Peaks to Piedmont, 100th Anniversary Outdoor Round-Up.

SWAP: Seed Packets

2012
07.23

A few years ago I attended a Leader event that had a theme of a Garden Party. I racked my brain all summer trying to come up with a SWAP. When I opened my “junk” drawer, I found my answer – seed packets! See I buy seeds with every intention of planting them, but I never do. So I had these great packets of seeds, but they had never been planted! Here’s what I did to create my Seed Packet SWAP.

Skill Level: Daisy – Ambassadors

Supplies: Seed packets, laminating film or contact paper, safety pins, and ID label.

Directions:

Step 1: I took my seed packets, one at a time and scanned them with my printer/scanner. I scanned them as a jpg file.  Scan each packet individually to have multiple seed packets for traders to choose from (the leaders loved this, they got to pick out their favorite flower or favorite color!)

Step 2: Open a blank Word document. “Insert” your picture into your Word document. At this point, you will be able to “size” your seed packet to make it as small as you need it. Fill the document with all the seed packet files that you scanned. You will only need one page. You may be able to get up to 20 of your seed packets per page.

Step 3: Print out as many pages as you will need. (If you want to make 100 SWAP’s print 5 pages.) I put my ID label sticker on the back of each seed packet before I laminated.

Step 4: After you have placed your ID label on the seed packets, laminate or cover with contact paper to give your SWAP some stability.

Step 5: Cut out your SWAP and add your safety-pin! Your Seed Packet SWAP is complete!

Happy SWAPPing!

New Troop Year Event Kick Off – Songs

2012
07.20

The last part in my series on a New Troop Year Kick Off event involves the closing of the event.

Our original plan was to close our event “campfire style”. We were going to have a fire pit and the girls would gather around it singing songs and having “s’mores”. Since we were anticipating close to 100 girls/adults we didn’t think it would be possible to gather everyone around a fire to roast marshmallows and have s’mores. So we came up with an alternative – s’mores in a bag! In a Ziploc bag we put miniature marshmallows, chocolate chips and Teddy Graham crackers. Instant s’mores! The Teddy Graham crackers were kind of expensive so if we did it again, I think we would just break up regular graham crackers. We did not gather around the fire pit because our day was colder than expected and the girls did not dress properly for the weather. So we moved the closing inside the gym.

Campfire Songs

For our closing campfire songs, we asked each troop attending to bring a song to sing/teach the group. Each group got in the middle of the big circle and led their song. We had everything from: Make New Friends, Thunderation, Brownie Smile Song, Boom Chica Boom, Fred the Moose, and more. We finished with Day is Done and a friendship squeeze.

What is your favorite campfire song?

Song: I Love the Mountains

2012
07.19

For this week’s song, how about one that is a bit mellower. It’s a great song if your girls are ready to sing in a round (about Junior level!).

I Love The Mountains

I love the mountains, I love the rolling hills,

I love the flowers, I love the daffodils,

I love the fireside when all the lights are low,

Boom-dee-ah-da, boom-dee-ah-da,

Boom-dee-ah-da, boo-dee-ah-da

Here’s a great video to give you the music and show how it can be sung as a round.

This week’s GS Journey is “It’s Your Planet – Love It!”. This journey focuses on the world the Scouts live in.

A quick reminder: In the last post, I gave some great links of general helpful groups that focus on GS Journey’s. You can check out that post here.

DaisiesBetween Earth & Sky:

I couldn’t find any videos about the Daisy GS Journey Between Earth & Sky.  Do you think your troop could be the first to create a video?!

New Troop Year Kick Off Event – Service Project

2012
07.13

For the fourth in the series on creating a New Troop Year Kick Off event we wanted to create a service project that all the troops could take part in. Usually for an event we would do a collection – canned food or pet food.

Service Project

For our event we decided to do something a little different. We have a bridge outdoors that can be used for bridging ceremonies. Under the bridge is a “river” of rocks. The rocks were filled with weeds. We decided that our project would be that the girls would venture to the bridge and pull weeds. In turn they would receive a sticker for their effort! The girls loved it! Leaders were telling us that their girls didn’t want to stop pulling weeds! They had to beg them to leave weeds for other girls to pull!

Our point with the project was there is service all around you! You just have to look. What has your troop done for a service project?

Song: Funky Chicken

2012
07.12

Just say the words “Funky Chicken” and you know the song is going to be fun! I think the girls enjoy seeing the leaders doing this one as much as they enjoy doing it themselves! (In other words – leaders you should be participating in these songs too!)

Funky Chicken

I say, let me see your funky chicken

(What’s that you say?)

I said, let me see your funky chicken

(What’s that you say?)

I said,

{Chorus}

oo-ah-ah-ah oo-ah-ah-ah oo-ah-ah-ah [dance like a chicken!]

One more time now:

oo-ah-ah-ah oo-ah-ah-ah oo-ah-ah-ah [dance like a chicken!]

Back in line now!

Other options:

I say, let me see your shopping cart

I say, let me see your flight attendant

I say, let me see your Cleopatra

I say, let me see your Dracula

I say, let me see your Polka

I say, let me see your Frankenstein

I say, let me see your funky cockroach

Make up anything you want (within reason!)

Here’s the tune for the song. Enjoy!

Here’s a video with some of the actions (and some different options!):

New Troop Year Kick Off Event – Games

2012
07.06

Today is third in a series for a New Troop Year Kick Off event. Today’s focus will be on games. I feel that it’s important to find some kind of games to get the girls moving or meeting new girls! Our event ended up being very craft heavy and game light, but we did have some ideas for different games. I’ll share some of them.

We had 2 outdoor games the girls could take part in.

Sleeping Bag Relay

Sleeping Bag Relay: This involved two teams of girls and passing a sleeping bag over one person’s head and between the next person’s legs. Everyone on the team passes the sleeping bag and the person on the end runs the sleeping bag to the front to win the race. It’s a lot of fun if you have different ages trying to work together! There are a couple of different sleeping bag relays you could do. Below are a couple of them:

Juliette Low Wide Game

Juliette Low Wide Game: This involved a hike through the words and along the way, the girls learned things about Juliette Gordon Low. Below is the Juliette Low Wide game we used for our event.

Hoops/Parachute: We had a huge field that we could have used for hoops or ball games. It was a really cold day and most of the girls enjoyed being inside!
