Songs: We Change the World

2012
08.30

There is no question that if we want the world to change, the women of the world need to step up and make their presence known! Songs can help inspire us to be the change we need to see! This song – “We Change the World” helps girls see their potential!

You can head over to Melinda Carroll’s website – Music for Girl Scouts – to download the music and lyrics.

We Change the World

words and music by Melinda Carroll

Chorus

Change the World, come with me,

Time to let our dreams fly free.

And it comes so easily, that is our way.

Every moment we’re alive, it’s our love that will survive!

In the Girl Scouts, together, We Change the World!

1st Verse

Sisters of every color, friends from everywhere,

We all make the difference, when we show the world we care.

The Girl Scouts are our family,

And they show us what we can be!

And I believe, together, We Change the World!

Chorus

2nd Verse

In a world with many faces, Girl Scouts find a way

To help in many places along the trails we blaze.

We light the light and do our share,

Reach out your hand and someone’s there,

And I believe, together, We Change the World!

Chorus

Here’s a video of the music and lyrics together.

Quick Tips: Safety Activity Check Points App

2012
08.29

I haven’t posted any new quick tips in a while but a couple of weeks ago I attended a meeting and got a ton of new tips! I will post about the others in the weeks to come (need to check them out first). For today’s post, I downloaded this the same day and have already used it at a troop meeting!

I love Apps (smartphone applications!)! I have been thinking for a long time (at least since I got my new iPhone and the new Girl Scout Activity Check Points [replaced SafetyWise] came out!) that this would be awesome as an app! Girl Scouts of the Heart of the South has done just that! They created an app that includes (among videos, event calendar, news, etc) the new Safety Activity CheckPoints! Now we can hand the girls the smartphone or iPad and let them find out what we need to do before we go ride a Segway!

Here is there blog post where they introduce the app. Have fun and enjoy!

SWAP: Western Boot

2012
08.27

Got a Western theme event coming up? Need a SWAP? I’ve got just the idea for you!

A few years ago, my troop attended a Western theme camporee. We came up with a few different SWAP’s to trade. We did 3 different SWAP’s. I’ll cover the other 2 in the coming weeks!

Skill level: Daisies – Ambassadors

Supplies: Foam, stars, “rope”, safety-pin, scissors, white glue

Directions:

Step 1:

Find a simple boot outline online. You can do a Google search for clip art boot shapes. Have the girls draw around the cut out boot (or if they are Daisies, have the shape already drawn onto the foam). Cut out the boot.

Step 2:

Glue on your “spurs”! I can’t remember where or what I found the star shapes, but you can probably find something comparable in a craft store. I may have used “confetti” shapes! I really don’t remember!

Step 3:

Glue on your “rope”. Again, I can’t remember what this was exactly! It “looked” like rope, but was thin like kitchen string!

Step 4:

Attach tag with safety-pin.

Your western boot SWAP is now complete! Have fun cowgirls!

History 101: August

“Now I know the secret of making the best persons. It is to grow in the open air, and to eat and sleep with the earth.”

Elizabeth K. Hayner, Girl Scout Leader and active participant in the Girl Scout Movement, personal notebook, date unknown

Sorry this month’s history is late! It’s been a busy summer! For this month’s History 101 lesson, we will explore events that took place during the month of August and during the 1980′s.   Girl Scout History information from Girl Scout website (check it out for more history!) and  Gulf Pines Council History  website continues to help me with my Girl Scout History lesson!

GS Hats-Adult -1984-1990

Girl Scout History – August: The first Juliette Low Session was held in 1932 at Our Chalet. The Wing Scout program received 3 Piper Airplanes for their program from William T. Piper, president of Piper Aircraft. In 1962, Girl Scout membership reached 3.5 million members.

GS Hats - Junior 1980-1985

1980 – 1989: New badges during this period included – Computer Fun, Aerospace, and Business-Wise. A new level is added to the Girl Scout Movement – Daisies. The Daisies did not earn badges or petals, they wore the Girl Scout pin and the World Association pin on their uniform. The Edith Macy Conference Center is opened. In 1980, the Gold Award and Silver Award are the two highest awards available to Girl Scouts. The Sign of the Rainbow, Sign of the Star, Sign of the Satellite was introduced to the Junior Girl Scout program. In 1982, the first Leader Appreciation Day is held. The membership fee in 1984 was $4.00.

Next month we will look at the 1990′s!

Song: Peace of the River

2012
08.02

Singing around the campfire involves a lot of different kind of songs: silly, repeat after me, loud and calming. This is a great campfire song to get the group to calm and quiet down before the walk back to their campsite for the night.

Peace of the River

Peace I ask of thee, O River,
Peace, peace, peace
When I learn to live serenely
Cares will cease.
From the hills I gather courage,
Vision of the day to be,
Strength to lead and faith to follow,
All are given unto me.
Peace I ask of thee, O River,
Peace, peace, peace

Here is a video from Music for Girl Scouts that gives you the music for the song. It’s a beautiful song and sounds great around a campfire!

What is your favorite campfire song?

Video: Hallmark Channel – Smart Cookies

2012
08.01

If you were a fan of the movie “Troop Beverly Hills” there is a new movie that features Girl Scouts as the main characters. It is Hallmark Channel’s “Smart Cookies“. It premiers on Saturday, August 18th at 9:00pm Eastern.

The movie is about an ambitious real estate agent that to earn an award is assigned to serve as a leader for a local Girl Scout troop. In the trailer it looks a little like Troop Beverly Hills!

Here’s a link for the promo for the movie: Smart Cookies

Here’s one of my favorite scenes from “Troop Beverly Hills” – Cookie Time!

After you watch the movie, come back and share your thoughts on the film!
