Video: 25th Anniversary Encampment (Camporee)

2012

In 1937, Girl Scouts did what we love to do today – camp. They held an encampment for the 25th Anniversary of Girl Scouts in New York. There were girls from 26 countries in attendance at the encampment (today we call them camporees!). I found a video of the “Silver Jubilee Encampment”.

The Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia council held the Centennial Camporee in June, 2012. They expected up to 1,200 participants! I was hoping to find a video that showcased some of the things they did at the Centennial Camporee but couldn’t find it. Maybe they are still working on it!

My council is hosting a 100th Anniversary Outdoor Roundup on Grandfather Mountain in September. They are estimating up to 800 participants to attend. If your troop is in the area, check out the website for more details: GS, Carolina’s Peaks to Piedmont, 100th Anniversary Outdoor Round-Up.

100th Anniversary Ideas: 100 hour Campfire

2012

How do you keep a campfire burning for 100 hours? Lots of fuel & wishes! (And yes that is over 4 days of keeping a campfire going!) The Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma accomplished this feat during their  100th  Birthday  Celebration. Here is the link that explains what they did and a contact for more information.

I really like the idea of the 100 hour campfire. One hour of fire for each year and representing all those that camped before us!

They also added another twist to it: troops could create “Wish” bundles. The wish bundles contained a stick for every member of the troop (girl & adult) tied with a ribbon or yarn. The troop came up with a wish and wrote it on a tag that was attached to the bundle. Below are some of the wishes from the GSEOK:

  • “I want every Girl Scout to have a sash filled with badges.”
  • “We wish to stay together through Ambassador and earn our Gold Award.”

Awesome wishes! If any service unit/neighborhood or group is looking for another idea for a 100th Anniversary event, I think this is a great one!

Here is a video from their closing ceremony of the 100 Hour Fire. It’s long (25 minutes!) but it’s a great memory for all!

Video: Presidential Medal of Freedom-Juliette

The Year of the Girl just keeps getting better and better! Yesterday, May 29, 2012, Juliette Gordon Low was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Her nephew was on hand to receive the award in her memory. What a great tribute to a great lady! She was a true visionary and inspiration to our girls(and leaders!).

You can hear the President talk about Juliette at the 11:23 mark. The medal presentation to her nephew is at the 26:30 mark.

Several Girl Scouts were able to attend the ceremony. Here is the link for the official Girl Scout blog post about the honor.

100th Anniversary Ideas: Buy a Brick

2012
03.20

So you’ve been in Girl Scouting a few years (or maybe 20 – 30 years) and you want your grandchildren (or great-grandchildren) to know how important Girl Scouting was to you. What can you do so that future generations will know that Girl Scouting is special?

First Order of GS First Headquarters Bricks for Courtyard!

At the Girl Scout First Headquarters you can buy a brick that you can have engraved and placed into the courtyard of the Girl Scout First Headquarters. The first batch of engraved bricks have arrived at the headquarters. They look really cool!

All the information on how to get a brick for your family or your troop is on the Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia website. They will have 1,500 bricks available for sale from now until the end of the year.

When our troop was in Savannah last year, we couldn’t squeeze a visit to the First Headquarters into our schedule (the girls are asking for a return visit!). Maybe I’ll get a brick for the troop and then we can plan a return visit so that we can see our brick!

Have your visited the First Headquarters? What would your recommend a troop do when visiting the First Headquarters?

100th Anniversary Ideas: Service

2012
02.28

Girl Scouts has always been about community service. Whatever the local community needs, the Girl Scouts have been there. This year (our 100th) many troops,  service units/associations, councils and the national organization are challenging the girls to step up and commit to community service in a big way – like 100 ways!

At the national level, GSUSA has the Forever Green initiative. Forever Green is the 100th Anniversary Take Action Project. February’s focus was on “Reduce Waste” by using reusuable bags and reusable water bottles. March’s focus is on creating “Rains Gardens” while April’s focus is on “Earth Hour”. Check out their website for more information.

The Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains has challenged their troops to participate in 100 days of service. From February 22nd (World Thinking Day) until June 1st they will be serving their  communities. The council has adopted three goals (Reducing Hunger, Reducing Poverty and Sustaining the Environment. Check out their website for some ideas.

My Service Unit has a two prong approach to service this year. We started out the year asking our troops to participate in 100 service projects. We have been tracking this on our service unit website – as of today we are at 28 service projects completed. We hope that this will give other troops different ideas on how they can provide service to the community.

The other thing we did was support the February Forever Green initiative - we designed reusable bags that the troops can now use to give to their families and during cookie booths so that the general public will have reusable bags! We created over 600 bags!

What is your troop doing to Take Action during the 100th Anniversary?

100th Anniversary Ideas: Singing at the Mall

2012
01.31

Singing Girl Scout songs is a tradition that goes back to the very beginning of the program. Girls love to sing traditional songs (Make New Friends) as well as silly camp songs (Penguins Attention). Is your local council hosting a singing event at a local mall? If not – why not try hosting/planning one!

Many troops on the East coast are lucky to be able to attend the Girl Scouts, Nations Capital “Rock the Mall” sing-a-long event that will be taking place in June, 2012. Our council is planning a bus trip to the event. However, a couple of troops in our service unit said that the event was too far, too expensive, etc – why couldn’t we have something locally, at our mall. So my co-service unit specialist & I decided to take on this “small” endevour.

We thought it would be small in the beginning! If you take on this event – be prepared to add people to your committee. To start at the beginning, you need to coordinate the date with the mall representative. Meet with the rep and get as many questions answered as you can.

You will need council staff help on various parts of an event of this size. There are insurance questions to answer – best for council staff to handle. You will also want publicity for the event – get your council marketing staff on your side early. They can help make this a successful community event.

A helpful person to have on your committee can help organize/contact song leaders or troops to lead singing times at the mall. To help make it a successful event, you will need either troops to lead songs or song leaders. Get a plan together about when troops can be on stage to lead a song and when the song leaders will need to be on stage to lead songs. We have a tentative plan to sing old traditional GS songs at the top of the hour (songs that will be sung at the Rock the Mall event). Every half hour, we will focus on “camp”/fun songs that the girls also love to sing.

Another committee member that you may need is someone to handle money issues. We will charge a small fee – this will cover the cost of a patch, a song sheet and some minor publicity issues (printing fliers or posters).

I’m sure there will be more details that we will uncover as we get closer to the event! I will update this post!

Are you going to Washington DC’s “Rock the Mall”? Do you have a local sing-a-long at the mall event you can attend? Share your information please!

Girl Scout Float in Rose Parade!

2011
05.17

One of my favorite traditions I had growing up was watching the Tournament of Roses parade every year. In my cold Midwest home, it was fascinating to watch the sunny California parade every year! Now the next Rose Parade (2012) Girl Scouts will have a special float in the parade!

The Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles will have the wonderful honor to host the creation of the Girl Scout float for the Tournament of Roses Parade (January 2, 2012) Click here for more info from GS, GLA.

Those girls (and adults) living in the Los Angeles area can help decorate the float! How awesome would that be! Registration for this special duty begins September 1, 2011. Check out the GS, GLA website for more info.

If you just want to watch the float pass by and sit with your closest Girl Scout friends (and make some new ones!) special seating is available. They will offer a 15% discount – call 626-795-4171  to make reservations (reservations being accepted now).

But what if you live in North Carolina, or New York or even Minnesota? You love the parade but can’t afford to take your troop to California to help or even watch the parade up close. Every Girl Scout can ride the float virtually. GS, GLA has created a way that for $5 you can dedicate a flower in honor of or memory of a Girl Scout, Troop Leader, Troop, etc and the flower will have the information on it and ride the float. Check out GS, GLA website for all the details.

GS, GLA is also partnering with Renees Garden. You can purchase special Girl Scout Anniversary Zinnia’s (money will be used for the Girl Scout float). Plant a zinnia garden to celebrate Girl Scouts 100th Anniversary!

No Girl Scout program/event would be complete without a badge/patch to go with it. There will be an official Girl Scout Tournament of Roses patch and 2012 Theme Bar & you will not have to put a single flower on the float! Details are still pending – when I have the info on how to earn this patch, I will write a post!

I personally can’t wait for the parade (as I do every year!). I plan on getting some zinnia’s & planting a Girl Scout Anniversary garden. I also will be buying a flower for every girl in my troop so that she can say she “rode” on the float. We will also look into working on the patch.

What will you and your troop do for the Tournament of Roses parade?
