Camping: Camporees

2012
06.01

In our council we have camporees which are a gathering of 3 or more troops together to camp! Generally a camporee is held every two years with all the troops in a Service Unit (some councils call them areas). This post is dedicated to those people that are up for some more challenges in Girl Scouting – planning a camporee!

I have been to a lot of camporees over the years. I hold those that plan camporees in high regard – it’s a lot of work. But as I found out recently – it doesn’t have to be!

Our service unit is in a fairly urban area (our city has over 250,000 residents). Many of our troops do not go camping a lot. The troop leaders aren’t trained with the outdoor skills needed to take the girls camping.

One idea that we are toying with for our next service unit camporee is “troop-centered”. This means that we will have 2 – 3 “events” that all the troops will take part together. The rest of the time, the troops will schedule their own activities. They can get a chance to cook outdoors, hike, do all the other outdoor camping stuff! We could even help troops “hook” up with some more experienced troops to work on some camping skills. This would be a great “laid back” planning camporee!

Of course, if you can’t help yourself,  a lot of websites on the Internet with camping themes! Scouting Web has created a camp themes book. You can find it on their website. Summer Camp Program has a list of 100 Camp Theme ideas! Here is another website with a variety of theme ideas. The UK provides a lot of ideas for camp themes also!

The last camporee that I helped plan had a Medieval Theme. It was a lot of fun to plan! All of our activities had a “medieval” theme to them. There was “Ye Olde Boating” along with “Climbing the ‘Castle’ Wall”. Here is a website that has some ideas for a Medieval theme camp.

Another camp my troop attended had a Western Theme. Some of the activities included “roping a calf” (hula hoop & chairs!) and tie dying bandannas.

What was your favorite theme at a camporee?

With warmer weather it’s time for troops to go camping. I found on GSUSA’s YouTube channel some troop camping videos from the 1950′s. I’m guessing they might have been used as training movies for troop leaders.

In this first video the girls decide they want to go camping! But the leaders are not ready and they girls don’t have the skills. So they take a couple of meetings to learn the skills needed to go on their first camping adventure. This video shows knife skills, how to start a fire and some conflict resolution techniques the girls use (useful even today!).

Next week – outdoor cooking & more!

Camping: Armpit Fudge

You can make funny sounds with your armpits, but did you know that you can also make fudge with your armpits?

Cooking on a camping trip doesn’t have to involve a fire or elaborate cooking methods. It can be as simple as fudge – Armpit Fudge!

Every time I ask fellow leaders if their girls have made armpit fudge, they give me the strangest looks! Really the idea is to let the girls discover that they can create and make their own food AND have a little fun at the same time!

Armpit Fudge

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 5 minutes

Total Time: 10 minutes

Serving Size: 1 serving

Cooking method: No Cook
Equipment: Ziploc bags (sandwich-size)

Now I just need to find that recipe for Tree Pudding or maybe Swamp Pudding! I wonder if the leaders have made either of those recipes?!

Camping: Winter Camping

Camping in the winter – at first glance this seems like an automatic – “No WAY!” But there are some advantages to camping in the winter for troops!

Younger troops: If you have a Brownie or Junior troop that has already experienced a sleepover at a church or other facility (remember camping progression!) than the troop is ready for the next step – camping at a campsite. The camps at our council have several winterized units. All of these units have heat (and AC in the summer) and a full kitchens available. They also have one room that either has bunkbeds or mattresses to put on the floor. All the girls (and adults) will sleep in one room. This is similar to a sleepover (everyone sleeps in the same room with the adults) but gives it the camping feel! You can use the kitchen to prepare meals (or bring items that are already cooked & you just need to warm them up). During the day, the girls can take a hike into the woods, learn how the camp looks different in the winter months than they do in the spring/summer/fall months.

Activities: Winter camping is a great time to focus on cold weather or winter type badge work. Your time will be uninterrupted (except with meals!) to focus on badge work. I have take a troop camping in the winter and we played different strategic board games to learn those skills. You could also work on crafts that are difficult to complete at a meeting (drying time, etc!).

Older troops: For Cadette, Senior & Ambassador troops, a winter camping trip is a great way to get the troop to focus on planning for a big event or to just hang out and “chill” with their fellow Girl Scouts.  Older troops need down time to recharge their batteries, help provide that for them in a great natural setting. Make sure that you stress an electronic free weekend. No phones, Mp3 players, etc or they will be texting, etc during the whole weekend. They CAN survive without the electronics for one weekend!

Camping in the winter can be a great time! The camp is usually not very busy, so you can enjoy a lot of peace & quiet! Take your troop winter camping soon!
