New Troop Year Event Kick Off – Songs

2012
07.20

The last part in my series on a New Troop Year Kick Off event involves the closing of the event.

Our original plan was to close our event “campfire style”. We were going to have a fire pit and the girls would gather around it singing songs and having “s’mores”. Since we were anticipating close to 100 girls/adults we didn’t think it would be possible to gather everyone around a fire to roast marshmallows and have s’mores. So we came up with an alternative – s’mores in a bag! In a Ziploc bag we put miniature marshmallows, chocolate chips and Teddy Graham crackers. Instant s’mores! The Teddy Graham crackers were kind of expensive so if we did it again, I think we would just break up regular graham crackers. We did not gather around the fire pit because our day was colder than expected and the girls did not dress properly for the weather. So we moved the closing inside the gym.

Campfire Songs

For our closing campfire songs, we asked each troop attending to bring a song to sing/teach the group. Each group got in the middle of the big circle and led their song. We had everything from: Make New Friends, Thunderation, Brownie Smile Song, Boom Chica Boom, Fred the Moose, and more. We finished with Day is Done and a friendship squeeze.

What is your favorite campfire song?

New Troop Year Kick Off Event – Service Project

2012
07.13

For the fourth in the series on creating a New Troop Year Kick Off event we wanted to create a service project that all the troops could take part in. Usually for an event we would do a collection – canned food or pet food.

Service Project

For our event we decided to do something a little different. We have a bridge outdoors that can be used for bridging ceremonies. Under the bridge is a “river” of rocks. The rocks were filled with weeds. We decided that our project would be that the girls would venture to the bridge and pull weeds. In turn they would receive a sticker for their effort! The girls loved it! Leaders were telling us that their girls didn’t want to stop pulling weeds! They had to beg them to leave weeds for other girls to pull!

Our point with the project was there is service all around you! You just have to look. What has your troop done for a service project?

New Troop Year Kick Off Event – Games

2012
07.06

Today is third in a series for a New Troop Year Kick Off event. Today’s focus will be on games. I feel that it’s important to find some kind of games to get the girls moving or meeting new girls! Our event ended up being very craft heavy and game light, but we did have some ideas for different games. I’ll share some of them.

We had 2 outdoor games the girls could take part in.

Sleeping Bag Relay

Sleeping Bag Relay: This involved two teams of girls and passing a sleeping bag over one person’s head and between the next person’s legs. Everyone on the team passes the sleeping bag and the person on the end runs the sleeping bag to the front to win the race. It’s a lot of fun if you have different ages trying to work together! There are a couple of different sleeping bag relays you could do. Below are a couple of them:

Juliette Low Wide Game

Juliette Low Wide Game: This involved a hike through the words and along the way, the girls learned things about Juliette Gordon Low. Below is the Juliette Low Wide game we used for our event.

Hoops/Parachute: We had a huge field that we could have used for hoops or ball games. It was a really cold day and most of the girls enjoyed being inside!

New Troop Year Kick Off Event – Crafts

2012
06.29

Today is the second in a series of ideas for a kick off event for your service unit/neighborhood. This post will focus on crafts. We started planning this event over the summer, with only 3 months of planning time. That may seem like a lot, but it’s not!

When we looked at the craft area, we wanted to keep cost out of the mix for our troops that were going to lead these crafts. So we focused on low-cost items, free, or recycled items for the crafts. My co-service unit specialist and I came up with all the different crafts. When we had decided on the crafts, we sent e-mails out asking leaders to start saving different items (glass jars, water bottles, etc.)

At the first service unit meeting of the year, we brought in samples of the crafts and let them select which one they wanted to lead at the event. We had about 15 different crafts to choose from. We ended up with 12 different stations at the event. Below is a list of the different crafts we had at the event.

Tissue Paper Flowers

Tissue Flowers: We liked this one because you can get tissue paper at the dollar store very cheaply. (You’ll see a theme here soon!) We were suggesting that the flowers be small so that you can get a lot of flowers out of a piece of tissue paper. For smaller flowers you don’t need a big “stem” so you could cut the pipe cleaner in half (again purchased at the dollar store). Here’s a couple websites that give you the basic directions to make tissue flowers:

Butterfly Hands: I wish I had a photo of some of the ones that were created! I’ll do my best to describe this. Using construction paper, the girls trace around their closed hands – each hand (2 times for each hand, you should have a total of 4 hands/wings). Cut out and glue onto another sheet of construction paper. I think they drew an oval and cut it out to create the body or they may have just drawn it on the paper. I think they added the antenna with markers and the Butterfly Hands were complete. This activity had a perfect place at our event. They were in a screened porch area that overlooked the butterfly garden! The only problem was when the wind picked up, so did their papers! There are several different websites on the Internet that describe this craft. I found one that was closest to the one we used!

Bookbinding: This was an activity designed for the older girls at the event. It was held in a separate room which was quieter. I heard that the girls enjoyed this project. There several videos on bookbinding on YouTube if you need to see the directions (if you’re challenged like me – I need to see how something is done!).  There are also a couple of websites that give you directions for bookbinding.

Bookmarks

Bookmarks – Plastic Canvas & Foam: These were two different areas that offered two different materials to create bookmarks. As leaders we always seem to have an abundance of foam shapes around. This was a great way to get rid of them!

Water Bottle Holder: This was another activity for the older girls because there was some hand sewing involved in the original design. The group that ended up with this activity changed it up a little. The girls that attended this activity loved the finish product! I found a couple of ideas on my Pinterest page that show different ways to make water bottle holders. It just depends on what supplies you have!

Plastic Shaker: This involved the recycled water bottles. The girls added sand and various other items (rocks, beads, etc.) to the bottles to create an instrument with a unique sound. The outside of the bottles could be decorated also with stickers or foam pieces. This one doesn’t require a lot of direction (just use what’s around your craft room!). But I did find a couple of websites with information!

Family Partnership Jars: This is our fund-raising campaign for the families. The idea was to decorate a jar (glass, plastic, whatever) with stickers or foam pieces. The family collected money in the jar throughout the year. At the end of the year, the family turns the money into the troop who sends it into council.

Friendship Bracelets

Friendship bracelet: There are tons of different ways to make friendship bracelets. For this one we used a circle of cardboard and embroidery floss. They come out really cool! This was a very popular area! I have a whole board on Pinterest dedicated to Friendship Bracelets! These are the two that use the cardboard to make them.

Face Painting: This was also a very popular area! We probably could have had more troops doing this one!

Troop Pride T-Shirts

Troop Pride Shirts: This was a troop activity. The troop designed a small foam t-shirt to represent them. We then took the t-shirts at they were finished and hung them up, clothesline style in the entrance to the building we were holding our event in. It is a council owned property so we were able to keep it up for several months. We hope it inspired other troops to do an event like ours!

Which craft is your favorite? Which one will you try with your troop?

New Troop Year Kick Off Event – Overview

2012
06.22

Need an event to jump-start the new Girl Scout year for your Service Unit/Region? We have a fun idea for an event for you!

Fall In Event Sign

My other half (co-Service Unit Specialist!) and I decided we wanted to kick off the new troop year with a gathering of troops. The idea was to give older girls opportunities for leadership & for younger girls to see older girls leading activities. It helps everyone to see the bigger picture of Girl Scouting!

One of our other goals was to encourage “On Time” registration for our troops. They could bring in their membership registrations that day.  That proved a little hectic for me! I am also the Registrar for our Service Unit and I was still  new on the job! Luckily our Membership Manager came by and relieved me of most of the registrations! Love our council staff!

The idea was for a “few” crafts & games. My co & I came up with the crafts & games and then at the first service unit meeting of the year we had leaders select which craft or game they wanted their troop to lead. (We know this isn’t “girl led”, but we were under a time crunch this first year!) We choose crafts that used recycle items or donated items. There would be potentially 200 – 300 girls in attendance at this event so we had to make it cheap!

Fall In “Clothes Line”

Speaking of cheap – we also wanted to make the event tempting by making the price low – $7.00. With that low price you also got a patch & a t-shirt! The shirts could be used as a troop t-shirt by troops throughout the year for troop field trips.

The event was a success! Of course there were some minor issues, but that is to be expected with every event!

Future posts will include the schedule of events, crafts created, games, service project, & songs!
