Video: Flag Ceremony

2012
09.12

Flag Ceremonies are an important part of Girl Scouts. Girls of every age can take part in a flag ceremony. I had my Daisies performing simple flag ceremonies. They loved it!

Today’s video is from Pria and Lauren – 2 girls in California who are working on their Silver Award. They created this video to show others how to do a flag ceremony. They also give some great flag facts and how to fold a flag.

When my Daisy troop performed their flag ceremony, we used a small flag and a bud vase to hold the flag. Every week, part of the kaper chart, the girls would hold the different positions for the ceremony – flag holder, guard, and caller. They couldn’t wait to take their turn as flag holder! Some would hold it really high!

We have even had flag ceremonies at camp! We threw a rope over a tree branch, used sticks to secure the rope to the flag and raised the flag. This way we showed the girls that we can have a flag ceremony anywhere!

I was talking to my co-Service Unit Specialist yesterday about flag ceremonies. We are going to do a flag ceremony at our October meeting to show/remind the leaders it doesn’t have to be complicated and can be done to start a troop meeting.

Let’s face it, our girls today are online. So let’s reach them through the Internet with those YouTube videos that they love so much!

This video showcases the Gold Award. It’s short and to the point. I think it’s something the girls can watch and relate to (and hopefully say – I want to know more…)

Let’s get our girls to Go Gold!

Video: Hallmark Channel – Smart Cookies

If you were a fan of the movie “Troop Beverly Hills” there is a new movie that features Girl Scouts as the main characters. It is Hallmark Channel’s “Smart Cookies“. It premiers on Saturday, August 18th at 9:00pm Eastern.

The movie is about an ambitious real estate agent that to earn an award is assigned to serve as a leader for a local Girl Scout troop. In the trailer it looks a little like Troop Beverly Hills!

Here’s a link for the promo for the movie: Smart Cookies

Here’s one of my favorite scenes from “Troop Beverly Hills” – Cookie Time!

After you watch the movie, come back and share your thoughts on the film!

Video: 25th Anniversary Encampment (Camporee)

2012
07.25

In 1937, Girl Scouts did what we love to do today – camp. They held an encampment for the 25th Anniversary of Girl Scouts in New York. There were girls from 26 countries in attendance at the encampment (today we call them camporees!). I found a video of the “Silver Jubilee Encampment”.

The Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia council held the Centennial Camporee in June, 2012. They expected up to 1,200 participants! I was hoping to find a video that showcased some of the things they did at the Centennial Camporee but couldn’t find it. Maybe they are still working on it!

My council is hosting a 100th Anniversary Outdoor Roundup on Grandfather Mountain in September. They are estimating up to 800 participants to attend. If your troop is in the area, check out the website for more details: GS, Carolina’s Peaks to Piedmont, 100th Anniversary Outdoor Round-Up.

Video: GS Journey Ideas – It’s Your Story – Tell It!

2012
06.27

The next Girl Scout Journey we’re going to focus on is “It’s Your Story – Tell It!“. In my searching the Internet this week, I have found some very creative people working on this Journey!

Before I dive into the specifics of this journey, I want to share two websites/groups that you can join and share information about GS Journey’s. You can ask questions to others who have already gone down the road before you!

  • GS of Southern Nevada have a Volunteer Central website. There is a group that focuses on the GS Journeys.
  • There is a group on Yahoo that also focuses on GS Journeys. They have some different files uploaded that your troop may be able to use to help them complete their Journey.

It’s Your Story – Tell It!” is a journey for girls to learn how to use storytelling to understand themselves and their potential.  Every level approaches the topic with something that is relevant to the age of the girls.

Daisies5, 4, 3, Cheer 4 Animals:

I also found a couple of videos showing what troops did for the 5,4,3, Cheer 4 Animals Journey. I’m only going to showcase one of them here, you can find the rest of them on my playlist (Journey – It’s Your Story – Tell It!) on YouTube.

BrowniesA World of Girls:

I couldn’t find any videos with Brownie troops completing this Journey. Maybe your troop could be the first!

JuniorsaMUSE:

I found a couple of videos about the aMUSE Journey. I like the way the girls did this one.

CadetteMEdia:

There were a lot of videos from Cadettes for this Journey! I had a hard time choosing one – so I didn’t! I choose two to showcase here! The rest are on my playlist (Journeys – It’s Your Story, Tell It!) on YouTube.

Seniors - Mission: Sisterhood:

There were a couple of videos from Senior GS on the GS Journey Mission: Sisterhood.

AmbassadorBLISS:

I couldn’t find any Ambassador troops that had uploaded a video for their BLISS Journey. Maybe your troop can send a video!

One last link I found in my searching! I found a troop leader that started a blog to journal her experience with the GS Journey’s. Let’s give her some “blog love” and go visit her and share your experiences! Her website is GS Journey Experience.

What has your troop done to complete the “It’s Your Story – Tell It!” GS Journey? Please share your ideas below!

Video: Girl Scout Journey Program Overview

2012
06.20

Girl Scout Journey’s – just saying those words in a room full of leaders will get a discussion started! (Sometimes it might event get a little loud!) Those that have completed a Journey successfully don’t understand what all the fuss is about. They have it figured out and can’t understand what the problem is. (Personally I wish we could clone those leaders and send them across the country teaching/doing it for us!)

Over the next couple of weeks I’m going to focus on each Journey and find some helpful hings that are around the Internet. If you have ANY helpful ideas, suggestions, please feel free to shoot them my way. Add the ideas in the comments section or send me an email @ GSLakeMom@gmail.com.

Today I am going to focus on an overview of the program (a sort of mini-training if you will!)

The first video is a great overview and for me it helped shift my focus from the “standard” way we did badges in the past.

This next video is a little long, but I think it is well worth the time to watch. You get a chance to see 4 different troops, 4 different levels and how the Girl Scout Journey program is working and working successfully within their troops.

This next video is a podcast talking about the newest Journey – It’s Your Story – Tell It.

The last 2 videos help us see the lighter side of the changes through songs! Songs that are familiar to us!

Next week – It’s Your World – Change It! If you have any ideas/suggestions that helped you get through the Journey’s please share them with your fellow leaders!

Video: Rock the Mall Recap

2012
06.13

This past weekend was the “Rock the Mall” event in Washington DC. There are reports that there were over 250,000 Girl Scouts on the mall! I have found a couple of videos that recap the event. For those that attended the event, I’m sure they have some great memories. For those of us that were not able to attend, the webcast that Nation’s Capital provided was almost as good as being there!

Here’s one of the attempts to break the World Record for the largest flash mob with the song ”Ignite”!

Also on Saturday, the US Postal Service unveiled the new “Celebrate Scouting” stamp. They introduced it in a unique way – with a song! (Of course, it’s a sing-a-long!)

The Washington DC Fire Department came to the “Rock the Mall” also! They brought their trucks and sprayed the girls to cool them off! I’m sure the girls appreciated the cool down!

Here’s a great video that shows a 380 degree view of the event. You can really get an idea of the number of people who attended!

A troop from Syracuse, NY was able to place a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. What an honor!

And finally to end my post today, a song to sing along to – “Fred the Moose”!

Yours in Scouting!
