Video: Rose Parade

2012

A tradition in our house is to watch the Tournament of Roses Parade every year. This year we had an even bigger reason to watch the parade. We were going to “ride” the float! We had sent in a donation so that our names could “ride” on the float. I read somewhere that there were over 15,000 names/people riding on the float! Awesome!

When it came time to watch for the Girl Scout float – I was more excited than my daughters (one even went to her room to wait it out!). I flipped back and forth between the two networks (we don’t have cable!) trying to see which one would have the “best” shot of the Girl Scout float. We were sure they were make the broadcast since they had won an award. We were disappointed that the Girl Scout float did not make the cut for the networks, but I have gotten my fix via the Internet (yea Facebook & Twitter!). I found a couple of pre-parade videos from KTLA (which also did a great job the day of the parade). Here are two of the videos they did with the float designers (Girl Scout Troop Leader & daughter) and girls working on the float.

Girl Scout Float in Rose Parade!

One of my favorite traditions I had growing up was watching the Tournament of Roses parade every year. In my cold Midwest home, it was fascinating to watch the sunny California parade every year! Now the next Rose Parade (2012) Girl Scouts will have a special float in the parade!

The Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles will have the wonderful honor to host the creation of the Girl Scout float for the Tournament of Roses Parade (January 2, 2012) Click here for more info from GS, GLA.

Those girls (and adults) living in the Los Angeles area can help decorate the float! How awesome would that be! Registration for this special duty begins September 1, 2011. Check out the GS, GLA website for more info.

If you just want to watch the float pass by and sit with your closest Girl Scout friends (and make some new ones!) special seating is available. They will offer a 15% discount – call 626-795-4171  to make reservations (reservations being accepted now).

But what if you live in North Carolina, or New York or even Minnesota? You love the parade but can’t afford to take your troop to California to help or even watch the parade up close. Every Girl Scout can ride the float virtually. GS, GLA has created a way that for $5 you can dedicate a flower in honor of or memory of a Girl Scout, Troop Leader, Troop, etc and the flower will have the information on it and ride the float. Check out GS, GLA website for all the details.

GS, GLA is also partnering with Renees Garden. You can purchase special Girl Scout Anniversary Zinnia’s (money will be used for the Girl Scout float). Plant a zinnia garden to celebrate Girl Scouts 100th Anniversary!

No Girl Scout program/event would be complete without a badge/patch to go with it. There will be an official Girl Scout Tournament of Roses patch and 2012 Theme Bar & you will not have to put a single flower on the float! Details are still pending – when I have the info on how to earn this patch, I will write a post!

I personally can’t wait for the parade (as I do every year!). I plan on getting some zinnia’s & planting a Girl Scout Anniversary garden. I also will be buying a flower for every girl in my troop so that she can say she “rode” on the float. We will also look into working on the patch.

What will you and your troop do for the Tournament of Roses parade?
